Featured Volunteer Opportunity

We, at Federation, are committed to caring for those in need. And, through the IMPACT! initiative, volunteers ages 50+ can help meet those needs in many different ways. InMotion is a nonprofit center devoted to the health and well-being of those affected by Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders. Launched by several Jewish Clevelanders who saw a need to increase services to the local Parkinson’s community, InMotion helps people take charge of their well-being and embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead. IMPACT! volunteers can help.

According to Jackie L., featured on their website, getting involved is valuable to those who access the organization’s services today and also those who might need services in the future. “InMotion helps me feel better physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually…I talk about InMotion all the time. You never know who will need it one day.”

There is research being conducted on possible links between people of Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish ancestry and Parkinson’s disease.

In 2014, a global study called Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) launched efforts to learn more about the genetics of Parkinson’s Disease, studying the connection between Parkinson’s Disease and certain populations, according to the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research website, which goes on to say, “In about one percent of PD cases, the disease can be linked to a mutation in a gene called LRRK2. While that may sound like a small number, the percentage is much higher in certain populations. In the Ashkenazi Jewish population, the mutation is responsible for 15 to 20 percent of PD cases.”

Getting involved and volunteering with organizations like InMotion, helps us learn more about our community and ourselves. Join us in supporting people affected by Parkinson’s Disease in Cleveland through our featured volunteer organization for the month of February.

  • Managing and directing all aspects of the agency’s introductions and orientations. (3 hour time slots)
