Dear Concerned Clevelanders,

It’s just 20 days until we celebrate Rosh Hashanah and during this last month of the Jewish year, Elul, we are called upon to begin the personal reflection of how we have lived our lives this past year. One of the key considerations could be how well we have acted toward our fellow human beings. Certainly this year we have had ample cause to judge ourselves as we reacted to the national debate over the events in Charlottesville.

But today our thoughts are with the people of Houston and the other areas impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Our Federation has joined with 139 others across the United States and Canada to pool our resources for a coordinated, planful, and efficient effort to help the Jewish community and its neighbors. We have people on the ground working with the Jewish Federation of Houston, attempting to assess needs and the best ways to immediately address them.

Right now they need cash. If you have yet to help, now would be a good time to act. I know there have been warnings about fraud and internet phishing. So please consider writing a check to us, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, 25701 Science Park Dr., Cleveland, OH 44122, or you can use this link for a credit card. Every cent will be sent on to the national JFNA emergency fund. There are no administrative charges.

If you are interested in volunteering or want to send anything else to Houston, please contact Susan Hyman at shyman@jcfcleve.org or 216-593-2887. She will be coordinating our relief efforts as we learn what and how to help, beyond cash.

Several Jewish institutions have been totally devastated in Houston. There are thousands of families needing assistance and tens of thousands of their neighbors. Let’s all pause for a moment this Labor Day holiday weekend to do a mitzvah.

Shabbat Shalom.

President
