Katerina “Katya” Rouzina has been named the 2019-2020 Roslyn Z. Wolf Cleveland-JDC International Fellow. In this capacity, Katya will spend one year in Kharkov, Ukraine, working with the local Jewish community to plan and facilitate youth camps, Shabbat programming, leadership training platforms and community-wide programs. Established in 2003 by the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, JDC (the global Jewish humanitarian organization), and the JDC Entwine Global Jewish Service Corps, the Roslyn Z. Wolf Cleveland-JDC International Fellowship is part of a cohort of nine young JDC Entwine Global Jewish Service Corps Fellows deployed around the world to address global issues through JDC and its partners.

A Jewish community leader and linguist, Katya holds an M.A. in Slavic Linguistics from The Ohio State University and completed a one-year course in Hebrew, Israel, and Jewish Studies at Hebrew University in 2009, as well as a course in Yiddish language and culture at the Vilnius Yiddish Institute in 2015. She has extensive experience working with young adults in the spheres of education and social justice, as well as proven success engaging communities in beneficial and uplifting programming in the Jewish community and beyond. From 2016 – 2019, she served as the Russian translator for JDC’s Russian-language interview footage from the Former Soviet Union. Most recently, she worked at Google via Artech as a language engineer for Google Assistant.

“I am thrilled to return to the Jewish non-profit world in a service capacity as the Wolf Cleveland-JDC International Fellow,” Katya said. “I am committed to the empowerment of Jewish identities, and excited to witness in person the revitalized Former Soviet Union Jewish community. I am excited to lend my skills and background in community engagement, Jewish education, language and culture, pedagogy, and technology to support the Kharkiv Jewish community.”

The Wolf Fellowship was created in memory of Roslyn Z. Wolf, a Trustee for Life of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, whose many years of dedicated community service has improved the lives of thousands of Jews around the globe and continues to inspire young volunteers. The Fellowship is made possible through the generosity of her late husband Ambassador Milton A. Wolf, a former JDC President, and his children in honor of their late wife and mother.

If you know a Jewish Cleveland young adult who wants to travel the world, applications are now open to the 2020-2021 Roslyn Z. Wolf Cleveland-JDC International Fellowship. Applications are due December 23, 2019. Qualified applicants must have a college degree or equivalent and proven academic achievement, strong leadership and communication skills, and capacity for independent work.
