“Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go”…actually I went to my sisters’ homes, and I took the only grandmother with me, my wife Amy. The horse didn’t know the way, so I just followed the Ohio and Pennsylvania turnpikes!

But Thanksgiving in the greater Philadelphia area with my family was the successful reunion idealized in a Norman Rockwell painting – at least Hoffman style. The long car rides gave me lots of time to reflect on family and the many things in life for which I am thankful.

After family, my list immediately turns to Cleveland because I’m really thankful to be living in such a compassionate and caring community. We in Jewish Cleveland really do take care of one another through the Federation’s annual Campaign and the amazing work of our human service and education agencies. The same can be said for Cleveland in general. We live in a very generous place.

The theme of our annual Campaign for Jewish Needs is “What Inspires You?”

My answer is you – the volunteers who share the precious gift of time with us and the donors who share their financial resources with us.

I don’t want to come off as a Pollyanna – especially in a time when too many forces are seeking to divide us for their own purposes. Our community is an inspiration for others. Cleveland works differently and I’m thankful to be a part of it with you.

Here’s what you can do on Tuesday, November 28, “Giving Tuesday” to prove me right:

  • Click on the "Add to Calendar" buttons below to remind you to give to Jewish Cleveland on Giving Tuesday!
  • Donate through the Jewish Cleveland Facebook page. On November 28, Facebook and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are matching up to $2 million of all funds raised on Facebook.
  • Give through  www.campaignforjewishneeds.org.
  • Call the Federation to make your gift at 216-593-2841.

To my extended Cleveland family, I wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Stephen H. Hoffman
President
