Steve Hoffman - Circle Image 2016

Temporary housing, water supplied from rocks, mana from heaven to eat – these are the biblical memories evoked by the Sukkot holiday, the Festival of Booths. Such temporary arrangements probably sound pretty good to millions of people, our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico, Houston and the people in the devastated Caribbean Islands. We will celebrate Sukkot starting Wednesday night by having a holiday meal in the sukkah and go back inside for the night, but millions of others in the hurricane zones are displaced.

Let’s start the week after Yom Kippur by helping the helpless.

I know I’ve asked you before to donate to the hurricane relief efforts in Houston and Florida, but now more aid is needed in Houston, Puerto Rico and elsewhere. There are Jews and their neighbors in distress. We can and will help all of the people at risk.

The Federation itself has already contributed $50,000 in emergency funds and this week we will be considering an even larger sum.

Please consider adding to it by sending a check to Jewish Federation of Cleveland, 25701 Science Park Dr., Cleveland, OH 44122 or donating now. If you want to designate your help for a particular area, just write it in the memo line and we’ll follow it.

On October 1-4th, please also consider bringing clothing, toiletries, household goods, cleaning supplies and non-perishable food items to fill the truck parked at the B’nai Jeshurun parking lot, 27501 Fairmount Blvd. The truck will be leaving for Houston on October 5th.

There will also be an opportunity to donate supplies at Temple Israel Ner Tamid Click here to view the Temple Israel Ner Tamid relief truck flyer for more information.

Enjoy the Sukkot holiday.
