A Special Shabbat Blessing

As we prepare for the first Shabbat after New Year's Day 2021, we are reminded of this special blessing – a variation of which can be found in every Jewish prayer book – for our country, its leaders and advisors, and our fellow citizens:

Teach them the insights of Torah, so that peace and security, happiness and prosperity, justice and freedom may forever abide in our midst.

Bless all the inhabitants of our country. May citizens of all races, backgrounds, and diverse perspectives forge a common bond in true harmony to banish all hatred and bigotry, and safeguard the ideals and free institutions which are the pride and glory of our country.

May this land, the United States of America, be an influence for good throughout the world uniting all people in peace and freedom.

Almost a year ago to the day, hundreds of Jewish Clevelanders came together in New York City with other communities to let the world know we are stronger than hate – that we would not be intimidated by anti-Semitic rhetoric and violence. May this be the year that all can heal, stand together, and respect each other.

Stay safe and stay connected.

Shabbat Shalom,
