Managing Director of Major Gifts

Managing Director of Major Gifts position:

Under the supervision of the Chief Development Officer, the Managing Director of Major Gifts will develop and execute strategies to drive the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of Major Gift donors ($10,000+) for year-over-year increases in number of donors and revenue. The Director of Major Gifts will work in partnership with the Campaign Director, Asst. VP of Endowments and the Asst. VP of Foundations/Funds to create strategies that integrate all philanthropic vehicles available to Federation donors. The Managing Director of Major Gifts will maintain a portfolio of approximately 100 donors and will direct a team of Development Officers. Additionally, the Managing Director of Major Gifts will oversee all Supplemental Fundraising Initiatives.

Essential Functions:

1. Manage and Execute Major Gifts Program for Jewish Federation of Cleveland

1. Work with department leadership and Development Officers to identify opportunities for Major Gifts that span all giving vehicles (Campaign, Endowment, DAF, Supporting Foundation) and develop a pipeline for future major gift prospects.
2. In collaboration with CDO, determine Development Officer goals for number of monthly/weekly donor visits/calls and set appropriate quarterly targets for securing major gifts.
3. Perform regular review of Development Officer portfolios to ensure proper donor management.
4. Actively manage a donor portfolio, qualify new donors, make discovery calls, and build a pool of new prospects and past donors up to the 7-figure level. Serve as staff for Supporting Foundations of portfolio donors.
5. Develop robust stewardship program to be executed by all Development Officers.
6. Articulate the value of supporting the goals and mission of Jewish Federation of Cleveland, as well as priority programs

2. Direct Supplemental Fundraising Initiatives

1. Work with other departments including, Overseas, Planning/Allocations, and Community Relations to identify and understand various funding needs outside of Campaign.
2. Communicate programmatic needs and related budgets to Development Officers.
3. Manage the process to create impact reports and other stewardship materials for supplemental fundraising donors.

3. Campaign Leadership

1. Work with the Campaign Director to plan Campaign programs/events that would resonate with Major Gift Donors
2. Create structure for proper engagement of various giving level societies

4. Supervision of Development Officers

1. Supervise a team of Development Officers, ensuring that they are creating individualized plans for their portfolios.

Additional Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Represent JCF in national forums for Campaign professionals.
2. All other activities as directed by JFC President or Chief Development Officer.

Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:

1. Excellent research, writing and interpersonal communication skills.
2. Ability to empathize with donors, clearly communicate our organization's mission, and effortlessly move from high-level strategic thinking to frontline solicitation.
3. An understanding of and ability to articulate the accomplishments and goals of a complex organization.
4. The intelligence, maturity and sound judgement necessary for interacting with major donor prospects, trustees and staff.
5. Ability to manage and mentor other fundraising staff.
6. Proficiency in a database system.
7. Knowledge of the Jewish community, culture, and traditions.
8. Ability to work well with diverse population.
9. Travel and the ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary.

Education, Training and/or Experience:

1. Bachelor’s degree in related field, Master’s degree preferred.
2. At least 10 – 15 years of development experience, including major gift development.
3. A demonstrated record of successfully closing gifts of $10,000+.
4. Experience managing staff as well as designing and executing donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.
5. Experience with Jewish communal work, fundraising and development, and non-profit organizations.
