Gross Schechter Students Take Home Top Honors in Science, Writing and Art!
At Gross Schechter, our mission is to provide children with an outstanding education that ignites students’ passion for learning in a rigorous and nurturing academic environment. We inspire students to lead engaged Jewish lives and achieve personal success. We see this coming to life in our students, who excel in and out of the classroom. In the past month, Gross Schechter students have been recognized for outstanding achievement in Science, Creative Writing and Art in local, regional and state competitions.
Ten Gross Schechter Day School students presented at the 63rd Annual Northeast Ohio Science and Engineering Fair on Tuesday, March 15, at Cleveland State University. Approximately 350 Cleveland area seventh and eighth graders presented projects in nine different categories. Second Place Awards were presented to Schechter students Lindy Bobrow, Netanel Linetsky, Daniella Sosonov, Avery Steinberg and Gabriel Wolf; Third Place Awards were presented to Ezra Galili, Zachary Mangel, Joshua Murdakhaev and Elizabeth Rush; and Honorable Mention was presented to Michelle Aylyarov. Special Awards were presented to Netanel Linetsky, the Broadcom Masters Award for writing, and Joshua Murdakhaev, the NEOSEF Board of Directors Award. Some of the student topics included: Desalinization of Salt Water, Plant Phototropism, Dental Erosion, Investigating Magnetic Levitation Trains and more.
In addition, seventh grader, Gabriel Wolf, presented his Science Fair project at the Western Reserve District Science Day at the University of Akron recently earning a Superior rating, competing against 290 other projects. Gabriel has been invited to present again at State Science Day at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in mid-May! Gabe’s project focused on the effect that suggestions in videos have on changing people’s minds.
Our students’ success is not limited to science. Seventh Grade student, Rose Cohen, who participated in the District competition of Power of the Pen (Interscholastic Competition for Young Writers), advanced to the Regional level of competition which took place on Friday, March 4. Rose has now advanced to the State level of competition which will be held at the College of Wooster in mid-May.
Three of our Schechter students took home honors in Jewish Federation of Cleveland’s Yom Hashoah Creative Writing and Art Contest. Nora Igelnik placed second and Joshua Murdakhaev placed third. Nora’s submission was entitled, “Hello, Mr. Liberation”; and Joshua’s was entitled, “The Light of Life”. Adam Kahn received third place for his visual art submission entitled, “A New Beginning”.
“We are incredibly proud of our students and their teachers. With over 75 awards received by our students at science fair in the past five years and sending students to the state levels of these competitions each year, we know that the education they are receiving at Schechter is preparing them for success,” Randy Boroff, Head of School. Schechter Power of the Pen students are led by teacher, Davida Amkraut and our Science Fair Students are led by teacher Matt Norton.
